THE ADVENT WREATH and THE HOLLY WREATH (meaning of)

The Advent Wreath

Advent is a special season where we prepare and await the coming of the Lord, Jesus Christ. Evergreens are used in the wreath to symbolize the new and eternal life given in Jesus Christ, the circle of the wreath symbolizes God's eternity. The candles represent God's Light coming into the world.

Three purple candles, a rose candle and sometimes a fifth white candle are used.

There is a theme for each week:

Week one is HOPE (or FAITH)
     Lighting of the purple candle

Week two is PEACE
     Lighting of the purple candle

Week three is JOY
     Lighting of the rose candle

Week four is LOVE
     Lighting of the purple candle

The white  candle is in the center of the Wreath. It symbolizes Jesus in the heart of the season and the Light that He brings into the world.

The Holly Wreath

The Holly Wreath symbolizes the crown of thorns worn by Jesus Christ at Calvary. It's red berries represents the blood He shed for the forgiveness of our sins. The endless circle is eternal life obtained through Him.
